ESTERO, Fla. — The NHL’s Florida Panthers have assigned defenseman Michael Downing to the Florida Everblades from the American Hockey League’s Springfield Thunderbirds, Everblades head coach Brad Ralph announced on Monday.
A third-year pro, Downing has played in 96 career AHL games and logged 18 career points on three goals and 15 assists. He has played in one game for the Thunderbirds this season and also saw ice time in one game for the ECHL’s Manchester Monarchs.
A native of Canton, Michigan, Downing stands at 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 205 pounds. He posted a career-high 13 points (2g-11a) in his first full season with the Thunderbirds in the 2016-17 campaign.
Prior to turning pro, Downing played three seasons for the University of Michigan and registered 11 goals and 54 points in 105 career games for the Wolverines. He was selected by the Panthers in the fourth round, 97th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.
Florida returns to the ice on Wednesday to face the Orlando Solar Bears. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Hertz Arena.
